A blurb from Bill about “The Billionaire’s Vinegar”

Filled with action, intrigue and a cast of characters that would do Tom Wolfe proud, “Vinegar” is a page-turner that would do Dan Brown proud. If that sounds like a novel, it might be because so many of the figures are either implausible or larger than life. Or both. But they’re all real, even if (alleged) fraud is at the heart of the story.

With a great reporter’s knack, Benjamin Wallace guides us through Thomas Jefferson’s 1787 European tour, a Byzantine world of wine figures led by Hardy Rodenstock (a personality as colorful as his name) and an investigation by one of the uber-rich Koch brothers. With a great writer’s knack, he brings these figures, not to mention what could have been some drab science and social history, to vivid life.

The biggest mystery of all: why this picaresque yarn hasn’t been made into a movie.

Taken from Amazon about the book:

"The rivetingly strange story of the world's most expensive bottle of wine, and the even stranger characters whose lives have intersected with it.  The New York Times bestseller, updated with a new epilogue, that tells the true story of a 1787 Château Lafite Bordeaux—supposedly owned by Thomas Jefferson—that sold for $156,000 at auction and of the eccentrics whose lives intersected with it.  Was it truly entombed in a Paris cellar for two hundred years? Or did it come from a secret Nazi bunker? Or from the moldy basement of a devilishly brilliant con artist? As Benjamin Wallace unravels the mystery, we meet a gallery of intriguing players—from the bicycle-riding British auctioneer who speaks of wines as if they are women to the obsessive wine collector who discovered the bottle.  Suspenseful and thrillingly strange, this is the vintage tale of what could be the most elaborate con since the Hitler diaries.  “Part detective story, part wine history, this is one juicy tale, even for those with no interest in the fruit of the vine. . . . As delicious as a true vintage Lafite.” —BusinessWeek"

Our featured guest, Bill Ward, is a retired food, wine, travel and lifestyle writer. He's been covering wine for the better part of a cetury, aiming to provide wide-ranging expertise without taking the subject or himself too seriously. His “Liquid Assets” column ran for 15 years in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, and his website, www.decant-this.com, features Wine Country travel tips, scores of profiles, primers and a blog. A James Beard Award winner for a series on Italian regional cuisine, he makes wine accessible and not daunting, helping people become comfortable in talking about and buying fermented grape juice. He has written for the Wine Enthusiast, Sommelier Journal, Wines & Vines, the Columbia Journalism Review and several other magazines and websites. He lives in Nashville, Tenn., with his way better half, Sandy.
