With Mother’s Day at hand (it’s Sunday in case that snuck up on you!), I was thinking a lot about my momma! My mother did not grow up on a farm; her folks were not farming people. She was a city girl. She worked and lived “in town.” She really must have fallen hard for my dad. When they got married, she moved out the the farm house in the outskirts of the smallest incorporated town in the USA at that time, Dellview, NC population 10 people. Country wasn’t even the word…rural, that’s the word!
Momma loved plants and especially flowers. She had the greenest thumb! For as good as a grower she was, momma got married not knowing how to cook. When she moved into the farmhouse, my grandmother taught her, and my dad helped! By the time the fifth child came along, she had gotten rather good at cooking and everyone in the community loved her food…especially the cakes.
Mom never stopped loving the things that city girls. She adored getting a new dress, and going out to dinner which was a true rarity. She didn’t wear makeup everyday, but knew how to get the best out of a Mary Kay compact and red lipstick. She adored a pretty table and had a penchant for cool, interesting costume jewelry. She knew how to be a country wife, but also a lady. Oh, and also a GREAT momma.
Happy Mother’s Day from Green Door Gourmet! Check out our Mother’s Day specials below!

If there has been a theme to this year so far, it has been wet and cold. Last year, we had ripe strawberries in March, but this year it is May and we have none. All of our farmer friends have been having the same issues, every time we plant a crop, more rain comes and washes it out. Luckily, farmers are eternal optimists and it’s looking like our crops will be in good shape to launch our CSA on May 18 (Mother Nature willing).
Just because the CSA hasn’t kicked off yet doesn’t mean you can’t come out to the farm! We are stocked up on all your favorite local goods and foods…farm fresh eggs, Benton’s bacon, local honey, and more! One of our favorite items in the store right now is Cruze Dairy Farms‘ Chocolate Milk. For those of you not familiar with Cruze, they were featured in a New York Times article last fall talking about their buttermilk!

I’m sure you don’t need us to tell you, but this has been a wet and cold spring, so our seeds have been taking their time making an appearance above-ground. We can’t wait to see their leaves! In the meantime, we’ve been seeing a whole different kind of Leaf…
We had the privelege of hosting the 2013 Nissan Leaf Media Preview event! The fine folks at Nissan brought a bunch of people out to learn about the Leaf and how it is helping the world become more sustainable. They even had a Leaf inside the Grange, so keep that in mind next time you wonder if we can make our space work for your event! A fun time was had by all and we are happy to be a part of such a meaningful movement.
If you’re interested in finding out more about the Leaf, visit the website here!

Alright alright, please keep your shoes on when you’re hanging out at the farm. What we meant to say was this weekend our friend Jeff Poppen, aka “The Barefoot Farmer,” will be teaching here at Green Door Gourmet! Jeff is practically a living legend, but if you need a refresher we recommend taking a look around his website here, or just doing a quick Google search and checking out any of the many articles he’s been mentioned in.
Jeff’s workshop is a part of The Skillery’s “Grow Down” this weekend and will be from 1pm-4pm on this Sunday, April 21. Here’s a brief synopsis:
“At this workshop, The Barefoot Farmer will share time-tested methods of growing healthy food, with topics spanning from compost, tillage and minerals to vegetable varieties, biodynamics, creating a planting calendar and much more. A Q&A will follow. You’ll leave with an understanding of how to grow the highest quality produce possible, whether you’re working in small beds or big gardens.”
Tickets to this awesome workshop can be purchased through the Skillery here!
At the Farm Stand…
To top it all off, we will be selling Jeff’s produce in the farm stand on Sunday! We are open from noon until 4pm so come out and stock up on some veggies and stick around for Jeff’s workshop so you can learn to grow your own! Jeff will be bringing: watercress, parsnips, kale, spinach, and green garlic.
Also, we still have herbs available from last weekend, as well as our own flowers and Clarksville hydroponic tomatoes! And, as always, we have the delicious goods and foods provided by our local vendors. Don’t miss out on this weekend at the farm!
ONE LAST THING!
Green Door Gourmet’s owner, Sylvia Ganier, will be speaking at the Southern Women’s Show today (Thursday, April 18) at 4:30pm, so make plans to head down to the convention center and hear her speak about culinary herbs! More info about the show here!.
